Language requirements for Scandinavian licensure through Sweden for Doctors Nurses Other Medical Staff
Regardless of whether your education is within or outside the EU, it is essential to meet the language requirement to obtain Swedish licensure and work in Sweden and Scandinavia. This means you need to demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian, or Danish at the C1 level according to the GERS framework.
For medical personnel from countries outside the EU, a certificate confirming that you have passed the C1 test is also required to proceed in the application process.
Our tailored medical language course
We offer a digital medical language course in Swedish, perfectly designed for healthcare professionals seeking to establish themselves in Sweden. Our course is entirely digital and conducted in a virtual classroom with instructors who are native Swedish speakers and fluent in other languages as well.
Our Intensive Program Offers the Following:
You can understand and use very simple words and phrases related to the most basic and concrete situations in everyday life. You can introduce yourself and others and ask questions about, for example, names, where and how someone lives, where someone works, and you can answer similar questions. You can communicate helpfully in a very simple way if the conversation partner speaks slowly and clearly and is willing to help you.
You can understand phrases and the most common words related to personal relationships (e.g., very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, work situation). You can communicate in simple and routine contexts, requiring simple and direct exchanges of information about everyday subjects and activities. You can use a number of phrases to simply describe your family and other people, how you live and where you reside, your educational background, and your current or most recent job.
You can understand the main points in clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, and leisure. You can handle most situations that may arise while traveling in areas where the language is spoken. You can spontaneously engage in conversations on topics that are known and of personal interest or relate to everyday life (e.g., family, work, travel). You can connect phrases in a simple way to describe experiences and events, your dreams, hopes, and goals. You can provide reasons and explanations for your opinions and ambitions.
You can follow the main points of complex texts on both concrete and abstract subjects. In your area of specialization, you also understand professional discussions. You can communicate with such a high degree of fluency and spontaneity that a conversation with a native speaker proceeds smoothly. You can express yourself clearly and in detail on a wide range of subjects, explain your position in a problematic situation, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various solutions.
You can read a large amount of demanding, even longer texts, and are aware of both concrete and implied content. You can express yourself almost spontaneously and fluently; it very rarely happens that you are obviously searching for words. You can use the language flexibly and effectively for social and professional purposes. You can express yourself clearly and in a well-structured manner on complex issues, provide detailed descriptions or reports, and connect points linguistically and contextually.
