EU MEDSTAFF was founded in 2019 with a clear mission: to address the acute shortage of healthcare personnel in Scandinavia and ensure that patients receive the care they need. The healthcare system in Scandinavia faces significant challenges, with over 223,000 patients waiting for surgery or treatment before the pandemic. Today, approximately 10% of hospital beds are closed due to the shortage of staff.

Research shows that for every additional patient a nurse is responsible for, the risk of death increases by about 12%, and the quality of care deteriorates by up to 32%. This shortage results in approximately 186,000 extra patient days in hospitals, costing around 1.86 billion SEK per year. Over 78,000 patients do not receive the care they are entitled to under the care guarantee, leading to over 22,800 suffering from care injuries and more than 1,638 dying annually as a consequence.

We have also identified that the private healthcare sector has exploited the situation, adversely affecting patient safety. Therefore, we believe we can save tomorrow’s healthcare by digitalizing the entire process for EU personnel, allowing them to move freely within the EU. We are starting this work in Scandinavia, with the goal that every doctor and nurse within the EU can practice where they are needed and wish.

Since our founding in 2019, we have digitalized the recruitment and licensing processes for healthcare professionals, effectively removing barriers that previously hindered staff from working across different EU countries.
