Language requirements for Scandinavian licensure through Sweden for Doctors Nurses Other Medical Staff

Regardless of whether your education is within or outside the EU, it is essential to meet the language requirement to obtain Swedish licensure and work in Sweden and Scandinavia. This means you need to demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian, or Danish at the C1 level according to the GERS framework.

For medical personnel from countries outside the EU, a certificate confirming that you have passed the C1 test is also required to proceed in the application process.

You can understand phrases and the most common words related to personal relationships (e.g., very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, work situation). You can communicate in simple and routine contexts, requiring simple and direct exchanges of information about everyday subjects and activities. You can use a number of phrases to simply describe your family and other people, how you live and where you reside, your educational background, and your current or most recent job.

You can understand the main points in clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, and leisure. You can handle most situations that may arise while traveling in areas where the language is spoken. You can express yourself clearly and in detail on a wide range of subjects, explain your position in a problematic situation, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various solutions.

You can read a large amount of demanding, even longer texts, and are aware of both concrete and implied content. You can express yourself almost spontaneously and fluently; it very rarely happens that you are obviously searching for words.
